Important Info about Cialis®

Important Safety Information for Cialis:

What is Cialis®?

Cialis® (tadalafil) is a prescription medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It works by relaxing blood vessels, improving blood flow to specific areas of the body, such as the penis, to help achieve and maintain an erection when sexually aroused.

Cialis® is not intended for use by women or children, and it should not be taken without a doctor’s supervision.

Who should not use Cialis®?

You should not take Cialis® if you:

  • Are taking medications called nitrates (e.g., nitroglycerin), often used for chest pain. Combining Cialis® with nitrates can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
  • Use guanylate cyclase (GC) stimulators like riociguat for pulmonary hypertension.
  • Have a known allergy to tadalafil or any of the ingredients in Cialis®.

If you are unsure whether Cialis® is safe for you, consult your doctor before starting treatment.

How should I take Cialis®?

Cialis® is available in two main dosing options:

  • As-needed use: Take one tablet at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. The effects can last up to 36 hours, allowing for flexibility.
  • Daily use: Take one lower-dose tablet at the same time each day, regardless of sexual activity.

Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours. Cialis® can be taken with or without food, but avoid consuming excessive alcohol as it may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness or low blood pressure. Always follow your doctor’s instructions.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking Cialis®?

Before using Cialis®, inform your doctor about your medical history and any medications or supplements you are currently taking. In particular, let them know if you:

  • Have heart problems, such as angina, irregular heartbeat, or a history of a heart attack or stroke.
  • Have high or low blood pressure.
  • Experience prolonged or painful erections (priapism).
  • Have kidney or liver disease, as dosage adjustments may be necessary.
  • Have a history of vision problems, including retinitis pigmentosa or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
  • Take alpha-blockers or medications for high blood pressure, as these can interact with Cialis® and lower blood pressure significantly.

Providing accurate and complete information helps your doctor determine if Cialis® is the right treatment for you.

What are the most serious side effects of Cialis®?

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Prolonged erections: An erection lasting more than 4 hours can cause permanent damage to the penis.
  • Vision problems: Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes may indicate NAION. Stop using Cialis® and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Hearing problems: Sudden hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or dizziness may occur and require prompt medical attention.
  • Heart-related symptoms: Stop sexual activity and seek emergency care if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or lightheadedness.

What are the most common side effects?

Common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Back pain or muscle aches
  • Flushing
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Pain in the arms or legs

These side effects are usually mild and temporary. If they persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Additional safety information

Cialis® does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Use appropriate protection to practice safe sex. Avoid combining Cialis® with other erectile dysfunction medications or PDE-5 inhibitors.
