Important Safety Information for Ozempic®

What is the approved use of Ozempic®?

Ozempic® (semaglutide) is an injectable prescription medication approved to:

  • Improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, when combined with diet and exercise.
  • Reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke, in adults with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease.


It is not a substitute for insulin and should not be used to treat type 1 diabetes.

Who should not use Ozempic®?

Do not use Ozempic® if:

  • You or any family member has a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC).
  • You have a condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
  • You are allergic to semaglutide or any of the ingredients in Ozempic®.

If you are unsure about your medical history or conditions, consult your healthcare provider before using this medication.

 

How should I use Ozempic®?

Ozempic® is administered as a once-weekly injection under the skin of your stomach, thigh, or upper arm.

  • Use it on the same day each week, at any time, with or without meals.
  • If you miss a dose, take it within 5 days; otherwise, skip it and continue with your next scheduled dose.
  • Always follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider.

Do not share your Ozempic® pen with others, even if the needle has been changed. Sharing can spread infections.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Ozempic®?

Inform your doctor about your medical history and any medications you’re taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, or supplements. In particular, let your doctor know if you:

  • Have a history of thyroid cancer or a thyroid nodule.
  • Have kidney or liver problems.
  • Have a history of diabetic retinopathy (eye problems caused by diabetes).
  • Are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Are taking medications like insulin or sulfonylureas, as these may increase the risk of low blood sugar when combined with Ozempic®.

What are the most serious side effects of Ozempic®?

Serious side effects can include:

  • Thyroid tumors: Stop using Ozempic® and seek medical attention if you notice a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.
  • Pancreatitis: Symptoms like severe stomach pain that doesn’t go away and may radiate to your back, nausea, or vomiting require immediate care.
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): Watch for symptoms like dizziness, sweating, confusion, or shakiness, especially if you’re taking insulin or other diabetes medications.
  • Kidney problems: Ozempic® can cause or worsen dehydration, leading to kidney issues. Stay hydrated and inform your doctor if you have decreased urination.
  • Allergic reactions: Seek immediate help if you experience severe reactions like swelling, trouble breathing, or rash.

 

What are the most common side effects?

The most common side effects of Ozempic® include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation

These symptoms are usually mild and temporary. If they persist or worsen, talk to your doctor.

Additional safety information

  • Weight loss: While Ozempic® can help with weight loss in people with type 2 diabetes, it is not approved for the treatment of obesity.
  • Safe use: Ozempic® does not protect against cardiovascular events in people without type 2 diabetes.
  • Storage: Keep your Ozempic® pen in the refrigerator. After first use, it can be stored at room temperature or refrigerated for up to 56 days.
